INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS UNDERGOING GYNAECOMASTIA
There are two types of gynaecomastia that I treat.
Firstly, the glandular type that is most commonly seen
in younger men/teenagers where there is actual enlargement and prominence
of the male breast gland. This type requires excisional surgery to cut
out the firm glandular tissue.
This operation is done under general anaesthetic as a day
case in hospital and may be covered by health insurance. Surgical drains are
used and these stay in for 2 - 3 days. The cut is made around the lower edge
of the nipple and dissolving stitches are used. The scars generally heal very
well.
The other type of gynaecomastia is the fatty variety seen
in older men or men who are overweight. Often there will be a combination
of both glandular enlargement and fatty tissue. The fatty tissue is amenable
to removal by liposuction. A combination of conventional suction and ultrasonic
liposuction is used which cavitates and liquefies the fat. If firm glandular
tissue persists then this can be cut out at the same operation. For straightforward
liposuction drains are not necessary. The patient wears a pressure garment
(Lycra vest) for several weeks.
There is bruising, swelling and pain with both procedures.
Recovery varies but generally you would need about 7 - 12 days to recover.
Liposuction results are most evident after about three months as it takes
time for the skin to contract and the fat layer to settle.
